One can take a career in helping those who abuse substances. Personally I think that’s great but I don’t think someone who has previously abused substances themselves should be the ones in those careers. No matter how long you have been sober I personally wouldn’t be able to trust them.
Addiction counselors are the most common careers in substance abuse along with psychiatrists and psychologists. Addiction counselors set up a plan for recovery that involves identifying the addiction, then informing of the behaviors associated with that substance and then implementing the best plan for that patient. Psychologists treat the mind while psychiatrists medicate it.
Personally I would seek out an addiction counselor and then maybe a psychologists. I would stay away from a psychiatrists because giving more meds to an addict seems more hurtful than helpful.
